Beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer

One of the natural resources of the modest-sized resort town of Villefranche-sur-Mer is not only the picturesque views from the nearby hills and Villefranche Bay, almost a hundred meters deep with crystal clear water. The local heritage of nature also includes coarse sand or sand and pebble beaches, which distinguishes them from the pebble beaches of Nice, where real boulders are often found, and swimming is strongly recommended in special shoes.

The beaches of Villefranche-sur-Mer are used not only by local residents and tourists arriving from Nice or Monaco, but also by passengers of large Mediterranean liners who stop here.

City beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer – Beach des Mariners

A free beach with a length of about 800 meters (the longest in the resort), where you need to come with your own umbrellas, sun loungers and towels. However, due to its purity, it is considered one of the best on the entire Côte d’Azur of France.

Getting to this beach is not difficult at all, since the city of Villefranche-sur-Mer is very small in size, and the vast majority of vacationers prefer to travel on foot rather than by car. Moreover, the train from Nice is almost close, and the beach is only a few steps away. The bus stop is a little further, but also within walking distance.

Plage de la Marinière is also good because it is almost never crowded. In view of this, it is suitable not only for a relaxing holiday with children – including small ones (this is facilitated by the gentle entrance to the sea), but also for diving, since not too far from the shore you can see schools of fish and other representatives of the sea fauna. Therefore, for divers and lovers of observing the life of the underwater world with a mask and snorkel, it is also one of the favorite vacation spots.

Another plus of this beach is warmer water and air than in the resorts in the neighborhood. This is explained by the fact that the bay is protected from cold winds from the north on three sides, although the full swimming season begins only in July. The disadvantages of Plage de la Marinière include sparse vegetation, which does not provide protection from the sun when the hottest time of the holiday season arrives. However, this is compensated by the presence of toilets, changing cabins and showers, after taking which and changing clothes, you can go to one of the nearby restaurants or cafes.

Pebble beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer – La Darce

Unlike Plage des Mariners, Darce Beach is very small and also pebbly. It is aimed more not at idle vacationers, but at fans of water sports. It is a narrow strip adjacent to the old port, where yachts are now located.

La Darce is absolutely devoid of any infrastructure and is not suitable for a family holiday. It cannot be said that La Darce, which is often called Old Harbor, is located on the outskirts of the resort, but the city of Villefranche with all its main iconic places is located somewhat to the side. Thus, La Darce may be of interest to lovers of solitude, for whom the coverage of the coast and seabed is not particularly important. On the other hand, the closest thing to La Darce is a natural park where you can take walks without feeling any influence from the city.

Beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer – Angers-Garden

On the opposite side of the bay, just behind the Plage des Mariners, another coarse sandy beach begins – Angers Garden, only 60 meters long. It is hidden in a small cove, but can be found at the end of Avenue L’Ange Gardien, where Boulevard Napoleon III leads.

The resort has another beach with the same name, which translated from French means “Guardian Angel”. In fact, it refers to the apartments of the same name and a three-star hotel, from which a road leads to the beach that has no intersections with highways. This beach is private, and tourists who come on holiday to the city of Villefranche-sur-Mer in France and choose other accommodation do not have access to it.

For hotel and apartment guests, in order to find themselves on the shore, they only need to walk less than half a kilometer among green spaces. Here, unlike the other two beaches, they are offered sun loungers, for which, however, you have to pay.

In any case, the beach holiday that Villefranche Bay offers is superior in many respects to the neighboring resort of Beaulieu-sur-Mer.
