New trends in the development of ventilation and air conditioning systems in residential complexes under construction


How can those who live in modern high-rise buildings get the cleanest air possible in their homes, especially if the building is located in a large populated area? At the beginning of autumn 2019, a system for monitoring and analyzing urban air quality was launched in the capital. Based on the readings obtained as a result of the measurements, not a single unit in the capital was able to show good results for which there would be peace. All numbers regularly cross safe limits, which constantly makes breathing difficult for Kiev residents and gives other negative effects. While it is difficult to improve the quality of outdoor air inside apartments, it is possible to achieve comfortable conditions with a livable climate thanks to modern ventilation systems.

Trends in the development of ventilation and air conditioning systems

Terminology used by craftsmen

Air conditioning – warming up/lowering the temperature and circulation of air inside rooms. During the air conditioning process, the chemical composition of the air will not change, but there will be changes in temperature and humidity levels. A standard air conditioner is a split system, which includes two units (one outdoors, the other indoors). If there are several indoor units along with one outdoor element, the system is called multi-split.

Ventilation – removal of used air and supply of fresh air inside the rooms. The simplest example of ventilation is a window that has been opened by a resident. Ventilation equipment provides not only for receiving air from the street, but also for humidification, cleaning, cooling/heating to the required temperature.

A recuperator is a heat exchanger that accumulates heat from the exhaust air and uses it to heat the incoming air.

Climate Control systems in buildings that are starting to be used

CC systems installed in premises to ensure comfortable living and work use the following processes:

  • ventilation;
  • recovery;
  • preparing air flows for processing;
  • hydration;
  • cleaning

Some of these actions are performed by the air conditioning system, while other actions are performed by the ventilation complex. The most commonly used are multizone or multisplit VRF/VRV systems. Multizones work with an unlimited number of blocks inside with only one outdoor one; multisplit allows you to use only nine indoor units maximum.

At the beginning of the 21st century, systems began to be used in Ukraine. Until the 2000s, split systems were widely used, which included one outdoor and one indoor unit. Over time, indoor units began to be added, forming a multisplit system. In addition to this, multizone systems with varying amounts of cooling element began to appear. Main advantages of VRF/VRV systems:

  • do not require constant attention from service personnel;
  • compactness and efficiency of equipment;
  • efficiency of system design.

Optimal results are achieved when using VRV in conjunction with HRV ventilation and control complex. HRV is an air handling unit with heat recovery. It uses the heat from the outgoing stream to heat the incoming one. This principle makes it possible to reduce energy consumption while maintaining optimal indoor air temperature.

Energy saving technologies

VRVs are capable of automatically adjusting the refrigerant temperature based on the load. As a result, seasonal efficiency increases to twenty-eight percent. Multi-zone control allows you to independently adjust a comfortable temperature thanks to the presence of motion sensors, directing the flow of air at the required temperature to people. The same thing happens when people leave the room – the system goes into energy conservation mode, saving money by not heating empty rooms.

Air recovery in residential complexes

To ensure the flow of fresh air into the room, eliminating heat loss, modern ventilation systems include a recuperator. The interior is ventilated without the need to open a window, without disturbing the temperature. Excess heat can be used for heating or hot water in other parts of the building.

Intelligent climate control

Modern technologies make it possible to use a mobile application to control five dozen units of equipment at once. The software makes it possible to monitor the microclimate in individual rooms, optimizing electricity consumption. Multi zone controllers are suitable for controlling several climate zones in homes at once, connecting them to the Cloud service. Additionally, the system will help integrate lighting, security systems, elevators and other components in the house. One phone or tablet is enough for remote control.
