Switzerland’s population will increase much more in 2023 than official statistics predict

That leaves the country ill-prepared to handle a surge in housing demand, real estate experts say. For example, real estate consulting firm Wüest Partner expects the population to grow by 148,000 people in 2023, which is significantly higher than the Federal Statistics Office, whose specialists predicted an increase of only 70,000 people. According to the forecasts of the same agency, to solve pressing problems in the real estate market, it is necessary to build at least 90 thousand additional apartments. If this does not happen, the country will be skewed towards the rental market, which will quickly overheat, raising prices to unprecedented levels.
