The average family in Germany spends almost 28% of their income on monthly rent

According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, gross rent (excluding consumables) per square meter last year was a national average of 8.70 euros. In large cities it is fixed at 9.60 euros. Nearly 1.5 million households pay 50% of their income or more on rent, and 40-50% of their income goes to 1.6 million families.

Due to rising material prices and higher ECB interest rates, housing construction is currently in free fall, meaning the housing shortage could worsen in the coming years. There are fewer problems with affordable housing in rural areas, but residents there must face additional costs, such as personal time spent on car trips.
